Sanibel Recreation Center / including Gymnasium
This project included a review of the existing facilities; space needs assessment and design for the replacement of the community recreation center as Phase I of the City of Sanibel’s Master Plan implementation. The project site is leased from the Lee County School Board and requires sharing of amenities and school programs. Scope included developing various design alternatives to maximize the site along with cost modeling. The new 32,000 (±) square feet facility includes new pool facilities with a separate toddler pool/splash area and a combination zero entry play area with water features, exercise 6-lane swimming pool. Functional spaces include: community spaces, multi-purpose meeting rooms, play room, aerobic/exercise area; lockers; arts and crafts, double gymnasium and support spaces. Project required community review and presentations to City Commission. Owner requested design meet sustainable principles, but did not want to go thru certification process. Sustainable elements include: chilled water system; insulated impact glass; deep overhangs; hands free plumbing fixtures; exterior natural lighting; recycled materials; shell parking lot; energy efficient lighting; local materials; and indigenous planting. The project was completed in January 2009 using a Construction Manager.
